What this sheet is for

Newborn sleep is unpredictable, and it can be hard to tell whether your baby is getting enough rest across the day and night combined. This log gives you one place to record every sleep period — naps and overnight stretches alike — so you can see the full picture at a glance and bring accurate information to your health visitor or paediatrician.

How to use it

Write the week's start date in the Week Starting field and your baby's current daily sleep target in the target field at the top — a newborn typically needs 14–17 hours across 24 hours, dropping gradually with age. For each sleep, record the date and time it began in the Date column, write the duration in hours and minutes under Duration, and use the Notes column to log how the sleep ended (woke independently, fed back to sleep, woke crying), sleep location, or anything unusual. Use both columns to cover a full week of naps and night sleeps.

What is printed on the page

“Baby Sleep Log” is laid out as two-column log: two side-by-side tables of date, value and note (18 rows each, 36 entries a page), with a target field across the top. Under the title it reads “Record every sleep and wake time to spot patterns in your baby's rest.”, and the line at the foot of the page says “Note the room temperature and whether baby was swaddled — both affect sleep length and can help troubleshoot short naps.”.

The remaining labels on the page are “Week starting” for the period label, “Duration” for the value heading, “Notes” for the note heading, “Daily sleep target (h)” for the target prompt and “hrs / mins” for the unit prompt.

Two things about this particular two-column log are settings rather than text, and “Baby Sleep Log” has them set like this. Target row is on: include the target and unit fields across the top. Weekly dividers is off (the opposite of the layout's default): draw a heavier rule every seven rows.

Tips

Log the start time in the Date field (e.g. '14 Mar 02:15') so overnight stretches and nap timing are both visible.

Add a 'W' in Notes for any wake caused by hunger — helps separate sleep-pattern issues from feed-frequency issues.

Total the Duration column at the end of each day and compare it to your target to catch cumulative under-sleep early.

The other layouts in this set

“Baby Sleep Log” is one of three sheets in this set, each a different fixed layout filled for the same topic. “Daily Feed & Nappy Log” uses the dated table layout and “Baby Growth Tracker” uses the notes and table layout. Pick by how you work: the layout decides how much you write and where, not what the sheet is about.
