New Baby Monthly Budget

What this sheet is for

The first year with a new baby reshapes household finances quickly and often unpredictably. Formula costs rise, clothing sizes change every few weeks, and medical appointments appear without warning. This sheet gives you one place to record what you planned to spend against what you actually spent each month, so you can see exactly where the pressure is coming from and adjust before the next month begins.

How to use it

Start by filling in the Month / Year field at the top right. Under Household Income This Month, record every source coming in — wages, parental leave payments, partner income, and any government family payments. Move to Baby & Household Expenses and write your planned figure in the Budgeted column before the month starts, then enter the Actual figure as you spend. The Difference column shows you the variance for each line. At the foot of the sheet, Total Income and Total Expenses feed into the Remaining Balance, giving you a clear monthly snapshot.

What is printed on the page

“New Baby Monthly Budget” is laid out as income and expenses: a four-row income table, a fourteen-row expense table with pre-filled category labels and budgeted / actual / difference columns, and three summary totals at the foot. Two things about this particular income and expenses are settings rather than text, and “New Baby Monthly Budget” has them set like this. Difference column is on: add a 'difference' column to the expense table. Notes box is off: replace the third summary total with a small notes box.

Tips

Fill in every Budgeted column on the first day of the month before any spending happens, so variances are meaningful.

Group nappy and formula receipts in one envelope; totalling them monthly often reveals how fast unit costs add up.

If Childcare / Nursery fees are not yet in play, redirect that row to track a savings target for when care does start.
