What this sheet is for
When a tenancy ends, a missed cleaning task can mean deductions from a security deposit. This sheet breaks the process into four manageable phases spread across the fortnight before handover, so nothing is left until the final chaotic morning. It covers every part of the property — kitchen appliances, bathrooms, carpets, walls and outdoor bins — in the order that makes practical sense.
How to use it
Start with Phase 1, '2 Weeks Before Move-Out', which targets the slow jobs that need drying or repair time, such as carpet cleaning and filling holes. Move to Phase 2, 'Final Week', for appliance interiors and tile grout. Phase 3, 'Last 48 Hours', covers the full vacuum, mop and final rubbish run. Phase 4, 'Day of Handover', is a quick dust and a walk-through alongside your landlord or agent. Log the date in the Completed column as you finish each task, giving you a written record if any disputes arise.
What is printed on the page
“Moving-Out Clean Checklist” is laid out as phased timeline: four time-phased sections (e.g. '8 weeks before', 'Day of') of six pre-filled items each, with an optional done-date column on the right. Under the title it reads “Room-by-room cleaning tasks to complete before handing back the keys.”, and the line at the foot of the page says “Photograph each room after cleaning — date-stamped photos protect your deposit if disputes arise later.”.
The phase labels slot holds four entries — “2 weeks before move-out”, “Final week”, “Last 48 hours” and “Day of handover” — so the sheet is already filled in for cleaning rather than left as blank rows to label yourself.
The phase 1 items slot holds six entries — “Defrost freezer and wipe interior with baking-soda solution”, “Clean oven interior: soak racks, scrub cavity and door glass”, “Wash all windows inside; note any chips or cracks in writing”, “Steam-clean or shampoo carpets; allow full drying time”, “Clear and wipe inside all built-in wardrobes and drawers” and “Remove picture hooks and fill nail holes with filler; sand flush” — so the sheet is already filled in for cleaning rather than left as blank rows to label yourself.
The phase 2 items slot holds six entries — “Degrease extractor fan filter; replace if beyond cleaning”, “Descale showerhead, taps and around plughole with white vinegar”, “Wipe down all skirting boards, door frames and light switches”, “Clean inside dishwasher: filter, spray arms, door seal and drum”, “Wash curtains or wipe blinds slat by slat with a damp cloth” and “Scrub grout lines in bathroom and kitchen tiles with a stiff brush” — so the sheet is already filled in for cleaning rather than left as blank rows to label yourself.
The phase 3 items slot holds six entries — “Vacuum all rooms including under furniture and along edges”, “Mop hard floors with appropriate cleaner; check for scuffs”, “Clean inside fridge: shelves, door seals and drip tray”, “Wipe all kitchen cabinet fronts, handles and countertop edges”, “Clean toilet bowl, cistern lid, seat hinges and base thoroughly” and “Bag and remove all rubbish including items left in loft or shed” — so the sheet is already filled in for cleaning rather than left as blank rows to label yourself.
The phase 4 items slot holds six entries — “Dust all surfaces, shelves and windowsills one final time”, “Check each room against inventory list and note any discrepancies”, “Wipe front door, letterbox and light fittings inside and out”, “Empty and clean all bins; check outside bins are free of rubbish”, “Sweep or mop entrance hall floor as the last cleaning step” and “Walk through every room with landlord or agent during inspection” — so the sheet is already filled in for cleaning rather than left as blank rows to label yourself.
The remaining labels on the page are “Move-out date” for the date label and “Completed” for the date column heading.
Two things about this particular phased timeline are settings rather than text, and “Moving-Out Clean Checklist” has them set like this. Date column is on: add a narrow done-date column at the right of every item. Phase numbers is on (the opposite of the layout's default): number the phases 1–4 in front of their labels.
Tips
Check your original inventory report before Phase 1 so you know exactly which marks and defects were pre-existing.
Work top-to-bottom in every room — dust ceiling corners before wiping shelves, and mop floors last.
Buy replacement items such as oven bulbs or shower curtain rings in Phase 1, not the day before handover.
The other layouts in this set
“Moving-Out Clean Checklist” is one of three sheets in this set, each a different fixed layout filled for the same topic. “Kitchen Deep-Clean Checklist” uses the single column layout and “Bathroom Deep-Clean Checklist” uses the two columns layout. Pick by how you work: the layout decides how much you write and where, not what the sheet is about.
